Among the most committed of modern Christian gospel artists, Carman has stated on several occasions how he was "saved' by attending an Andrae Crouch concert in his youth. Initially discovered by Bill Gaither, he subsequently started a ministry with its own recording arm. Many of his albums feature extended narratives and biblical abstractions in addition to music. His breakthrough album came in 1988 with Live... Radically Saved, a live album featuring R&B, rock and even Christian rap. Another in-concert collection, 1991's Shakin" The House, featured more conventional gospel songwriting, assisted by the Christ Church Choir. In 1993 he moved to Sparrow Records to record The Standard, which concentrated more firmly on music than his previous studio collections. The release of R.I.O.T. (Righteous Invasion Of Truth) was supported by a 90-city tour in 1996 and a single, "No Monsters", released to coincide with Halloween. By this time he had already secured gold status for six previous albums, and though there was little modification of his previous evangelistic messages, R.I.O.T. also sold heavily within the contemporary Christian music community. Carman's Texas Stadium Show in Dallas, Texas, in 1994, had an estimated audience of 71,000. However, he continues to tour primarily on the basis of free shows supported by audience donations. In addition to his musical activities, he also presents his own Times 2 television programme for the Trinity Broadcasting Network.
