Captain Beyond
Based in Los Angeles, this Anglo-American "supergroup" was formed in 1972 around Rod Evans (b. 19 January 1947, Slough, Berkshire, England; vocals, ex-Deep Purple), Bobby Caldwell (drums, ex-Johnny Winter) and two former members of Iron Butterfly, Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt (b. 7 July 1948, Florida, USA; guitar) and Lee Dorman (b. 19 September 1945, St. Louis, Missouri, USA; bass). Although Captain Beyond established the unit's hard rock style, this initial line-up proved incompatible and Caldwell was replaced by Marty Rodriguez for the Latin-influenced Sufficiently Breathless. The album also featured Guille Garcia (congas) and Reese Wynans (keyboards). The departure of Evans precipitated a lengthy period of inactivity following a short winter tour, which featured the returning Caldwell. In 1975 Reinhardt, Dorman and Caldwell were joined by new singer Willy Daffern (ex-Hunger). This line-up broke up following the release of Dawn Explosion. Caldwell reunited with Reinhardt in 1998 to revive the Captain Beyond name, recruiting new members Jimi Interval (vocals), Jeff Artabasy (bass) and Dan Frye (keyboards).
