b. Germaine Williams, 9 December 1974, Jamaica, West Indies. Basing himself in New Jersey, USA, rapper Canibus also spent time in London and Georgia, where he studied computer information systems at Dekalb College. His hard-edged rapping skills made him an in-demand member of the underground mix-tape circuit, before coming to the attention of Fugees rapper Wyclef Jean. Williams contributed to Wyclef's 1997 solo debut, and made further appearances on the Rhyme And Reason soundtrack (with Heltah Skeltah on "Uni-4-Orm'), and the Lost Boyz' Love Peace And Nappiness. His big break came about through a very public falling out with the veteran LL Cool J. The two rappers clashed over Canibus" contribution to the track "4,3,2,1" on LL Cool J's Phenomenon, with the result that he included some less than complimentary lines about Canibus in the released product. The media coverage helped boost Canibus into the public eye, leading to a deal with Universal Records. The single "Second Round KO', featuring an unlikely contribution from boxer Mike Tyson and a vitriolic reply to Cool J's tirade, broke into the US Top 30 in May 1998. Canibus' intense in-your-face delivery proved wearing over the course of an album, but Can-I-Bus" musically diverse backing tracks, skilfully constructed by Wyclef and star producer Jerry Wonder, were a redeeming feature. The album was initially successful, debuting at US number 2 in September 1998, but long-term sales dropped off as bad word-of-mouth began to spread about the rapper's talent.
