The Buckinghams
Formed in Chicago, Illinois, USA, in 1966, the Buckinghams originally comprised Dennis Tufano (b. 11 September 1946, Chicago, Illinois, USA; vocals), Carl Giammarese (b. 21 August 1947, Chicago, Illinois, USA; lead guitar), Dennis Miccoli (organ), Nick Fortuna (b. 1 May 1946, Chicago, Illinois, USA; bass) and Jon Poulos (b. 31 March 1947, Chicago, Illinois, USA, d. 26 March 1980; drums). Although their first hit, the US chart-topper "Kind Of A Drag", was their only gold disc, the band enjoyed a consistent run of US chart successes throughout 1967, achieving two further US Top 10 entries with "Don't You Care" and "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy'. Miccoli was latterly replaced by Marty Grebb (b. 2 September 1946, Chicago, Illinois, USA) before the Buckinghams" staid image was deemed pass by a more discerning audience. Nevertheless, despite those slick, commercial singles, their albums showed a desire to experiment. Produced and directed by Jim Guercio, such releases hinted at the brass arrangements this talented individual later brought to protgs Chicago. Unable to reconcile their image and ambitions, the quintet split up in 1970.
