Clara Nunes
b. 1943, Minas Gerais, Brazil, d. 1983. Nunes began her musical career in the mid-60s as a singer of boleros. She subsequently switched to the more danceable samba style with which she became associated for the rest of her career. She had numerous Brazilian hits with songs written by some of the best-known composers of samba, (including Chico Buarque, Joao Bosco and Paulinho da Viola). A selection of this material can be found on Meus Momentos. A national institution in her own country, where she was known as "the Queen of Samba" and "the Samba Warrior", her death in 1983 resulted in a state of mourning throughout Brazil. The mid-90s collection ConVida features the original vocals of Nunes in posthumous "duets" with newly recorded vocals from Buarque, Bosco, da Viola, Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento and others.
