Bran Van 3000
This sprawling, highly eclectic Canadian outfit were formed by Montreal-based video director James "Bran Man" Di Salvio, whose CV includes work for Branford Marsalis and Sarah McLachlan. His extensive record collection also ensured work as a part-time DJ, but it was not until the late 90s that he decided to pursue a recording career. Di Salvio hooked up with Canadian dance music veteran "EP" Bergen, who had released an album on TOX Records as far back as 1992. Musical director Di Salvio and co-producer Bergen were joined in the initial line-up of Bran Van 3000 (the origin of the name is dubious) by vocalists Sara Johnston and Jayne Hill, but gradually recruited a large cast of Montreal musicians for recording and touring purposes. Experienced rapper Steve "Liquid" Hawley, guitarist Nick Hynes, bass player Gary McKenzie, drummer Rob Joanisse, and vocalist St‚phane Moraille were brought on board to augment the band's sample-heavy mixture of sprightly indie pop melodies, club beats, trip-hop sprawl, and cheesy lounge music.
