95 South
From the Chill Deal Boys (who recorded albums for Quality Records) stable, and part of Toy Productions, 95 South were credited with starting a mini-revival in electro hip-hop with their huge 1993 hit, "Whoot! There It Is". Sampling Afrika Bambaataa's epic "Planet Rock", the single returned to goodtime, basic beat-box tunes, with lyrics concentrating on the party angle, underpinned by the mighty Florida/Miami Bass sound. It was released in competition with Tag Team's similarly themed record and was followed by an album that, good as it was in its own right, offered more of exactly the same. The group comprises Bootyman, Church's, Black and DJ Marcus. Together they created a monster in "Whoot!" that refused to die; after high-profile appearances on programmes like The Arsenio Hall Show it was adopted by both the New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Fillies as their theme tune. All of this was lapped up by the protagonists: "We are a group with a simple message. We are positive, not political or controversial. We make fun music that anyone can get into".
