Kid Koala
b. Eric Yick-Keung San, 1974, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Armed with multiple record decks and a stack of vinyl, self-confessed DJ-nerd Kid Koala aka DJ Eric Yick-Keung San creates thrift-store audio collages that are densely packed with sonic detail. The Scratchappyland demo that precipitated the irreverent turntablist signing to Ninja Tune Records in 1997 unusually featured scratches of Genesis, Charlie Brown, and the Muppets. San has credited pre-school education series Sesame Street as a formative influence: "I'd really like to write songs about the letter Q. I was raised on the show and I guess you can see the short attention span syndrome in my music." Despite this claim, the construction of his records actually necessitates painstaking preparation. The DJ has all his records catalogued in notebooks listing potentially intriguing samples. These notebooks are illustrated with diagrams and descriptions documenting where on each record the special "scratchable" sound occurs. The turntablist is likely to invest the same obsessive level of practice and dedication as any other virtuoso instrumentalist.
