Junkie XL
b. Tom Holkenborg, 8 December 1967, Lichtenvoorde, Netherlands. One of the pre-eminent remixers in the field of industrial rock, Holkenborg was originally influenced by his exposure to Vera, his local, world-renowned music venue in Groningen, Holland. Afterwards Holkenborg joined a series of bands, including Weekend At Waikiki and Nerve (the latter recorded Cancer Of Choice for Play It Again Sam Records). However, he was attracted to the possibilities of dance music and remixing in 1989, while attending the Dutch Lowlands Festival. There he saw metal fans being converted by cutting edge dance music at the dance tent, and as Junkie XL (Xpanding Limits) started working on a wholly different batch of raw dance/rock material. Impressed by what they heard of these demo sessions, Roadrunner Records asked him to do a remix for Dog Eat Dog. Industrial metal band Fear Factory then invited Holkenborg to remix tracks for their 1997 collection Remanufacture (Cloning Technology) (he has also worked with Ohio punk band New Bomb Turks). Fear Factory's Dino Cazares offered to play on Junkie XL's debut album to return the compliment, providing all the guitar work. This led Holkenborg to reassess the project, deciding to make Junkie XL a full-time working band. Long-standing friends Rene van der Zee (drums) and Baz Mattie (drums) completed the line-up. Ex-Urban Dance Squad singer Rudeboy was brought in to provide raps on two of the tracks on the subsequent debut album, Saturday Teenage Kick (1998), and elected to become a full-time member. However, 8,000 copies of the album had to be withdrawn when Bob Mould (Hsker D/Sugar) objected to the uncleared use of a sample of his music. One track, "Def Beat", went on to be used on the soundtracks of several popular computer games.
