Monkey Mafia
b. Jon Carter, London, England. Monkey Mafia is the recording name used by DJ Carter, a regular on the big beat scene. Although it is a term Carter resents, the big beat sound, which became massively popular in the late 90s, was spearheaded not only by him but by acts such as the Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, Bentley Rhythm Ace, the Propellerheads and the Skint Records label. He was a member of various mediocre pub-rock and cover bands while studying philosophy in Southampton. His influences reach beyond the usual reference points of Kraftwerk, Public Enemy, Schoolly D and obscure electro and hip-hop, encompassing 60s rock, soul, dub, dancehall and reggae. His sound, both DJing and recorded, is a dynamic sound clash of ragga, funk, menacing dub and stuttering guitar-based grooves. Carter moved back to London in 1993 and began learning engineering and production skills in the studios of hardcore and jungle labels such as Trouble On Vinyl and No U-Turn. In 1995, he also recorded a number of tracks for the Wall Of Sound label under the name Artery, including "The Dollar". Carter signed to Heavenly Records (a subsidiary of Deconstruction Records) later that year. His debut single for the label, "Blow The Whole Joint Up" was an immediate hit with the booming "acid-hop" scene in the UK.
