Technotronic
Belgian commercial techno outfit created by producer Jo Bogaert, aka Thomas De Quincy. After playing keyboards in the indie outfit White Light in the mid-80s, Bogaert began working on his own dance music tracks, using various pseudonyms such as Nux Nemo and Acts Of Madmen. He was looking for a female rapper to sing over a backing track he had produced, before stumbling upon Ya Kid K (b. Manuela Kamosi, Zaire) in the Antwerp rap group, Fresh Beat. Kamosi had moved to Belgium from her native Zaire at 11, and later spent some time in Chicago where she was introduced to rap and deep house. With Bogaert she recorded "Pump Up The Jam", which eventually reached number 2 in both the US and UK charts in 1989. The single was actually credited to Technotronic featuring Felly (a model who appeared on the cover). However, when Pump Up The Jam: The Album was released they were rebilled as Technotronic Featuring Ya Kid K. The album also featured MC Eric whose most notable contribution was the chant sequence on another hit, "This Beat Is Technotronic". Follow-ups included "Get Up! (Before The Night Is Over)" with Ya Kid K, "Rockin' Over The Beat", "Megamix" (Bogaert on his own) and "Turn It Up' (Technotronic Featuring Melissa And Einstein). Ya Kid K went on to perform on Hi Tek 3"s "Spin That Wheel" in 1990 (a version of which was included on Technotronic's Trip On This remix album) and later pursued a solo career. She was replaced by Reggie Magloire (who had previously worked with Indeep) for the album Body To Body. Technotronic's last chart success came in 1992 when a track from their debut album, "Move That Body", reached US number 5 thanks to its use in a Revlon television commercial. Bogaert has continued to record sporadically with Technotronic as well as releasing the solo projects, Different Voices (1993) and Millennium (1996).
