Crystal Waters
b. 10 October 1964, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Waters' enjoys one of the more colourful backgrounds among dance music's modern female exponents. She majored in Computer Science at Howard University. Her father was jazz musician Junior Waters, and her great-aunt Ethel Waters. Indeed everyone in her family played an instrument, though some of her own initial forays were as the youngest member of the American Poets Society. Her entry into the music scene could hardly have been more dramatic. "Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)" was the song that did it for her with the production know-how of the Basement Boys, it became the summer anthem of 1991 in many house clubs throughout Britain and Europe. At the time she was still employed as a computer technician issuing the FBI with warrants at the Washington DC parole board. The song (retitled "Gypsy Woman (La Da Dee)") eventually rose to number 2 in the UK charts, and brought her success over in America too, though her first album received mixed reviews.
