Drag-On
b. Mel Smalls, 1980, New York City, New York, USA. Under the tutelage of hip-hop star DMX and the Ruff Ryders crew, rapper Drag-On made a name for himself in the early years of the twenty-first century with his rapid-fire rhyming skills (incidentally where his nickname comes from). Born in the Bronx (specifically, Soundview's Bronxdale Projects), Drag-On has been a resident of several different other local boroughs, including Queens, Yonkers, and Bedford Stuyvesant. Living largely on the streets, Drag-On found himself homeless at certain points, before he began making ends meet by selling clothes in Harlem. During this time, Drag-On met a friend who was an acquaintance of Ruff Ryders co-CEO Darrin "Dee' Dean. It was not long before one of Ruff Ryders' leading recording artists, DMX, became aware of Drag-On's talents and took the up-and-coming rapper under his wing, appearing on chart-topping DMX releases such as 1998's Flesh Of My Flesh, Blood Of My Blood and 1999"s ... And Then There Was X, before launching his own solo recording career. Whetting the rap world's appetite by issuing a "street album" titled Back From Hell, and contributing the excellent "Down Bottom' to the Ruff Ryders" compilation Ryde Or Die Vol. 1, Drag-On issued his first official album, Opposite Of H2O, in early 2000. Despite the album clawing its way into the Top 10 of the US Billboard album charts, Drag-On put his promising recording career on the backburner as he turned his attention to launching an acting career. Spots in movies such as the DMX-led vehicles Exit Wounds and Cradle 2 The Grave followed, as well as The Hustle. However, Drag-On's desire to rap eventually returned, resulting in the release of Hell And Back in early 2004, a recording that included guest spots by Jadakiss, Eve, Swizz Beats, Styles, and his old friend DMX.
