Margareth Menezes
b. 13 October 1963, Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Menezes began singing and playing guitar in her local church choir at the age of 14. A couple of years later she started to take acting lessons and by the early 80s was dividing her time between singing in nightclubs and acting in theatrical productions. Later in the decade she also began to sing with carnival groups, and in 1988 made her live debut outside of Brazil, giving a concert in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In the same year she signed to PolyGram Brazil who released her debut album, Margareth Menezes, which mixed Brazilian influences with funk, rock and blues and featured the classic "Uma Hist¢ria De If ". Her second album, Um Canto Pra Subir, included reggae influences, a duet with Trinidadian soca star David Rudder and some songs performed by Menezes in English. She toured throughout Brazil alongside Gilberto Gil and throughout the world as the opening act and backing singer on David Byrne's Rei Momo tour. At the same time Mango Records released Ellegibo, a compilation of material from her two Brazilian albums. Her first international release, it went on to top the Billboard World Music Chart. She toured as a solo artist throughout North America and Europe in 1990 and also performed with Gilberto Gil and Jimmy Cliff in her native Salvador. Kindala, released internationally in 1991, featured strong elements of samba-reggae with Cliff guesting on and co-writing the song "Me Abraca E Me Beija". Menezes undertook a worldwide tour to promote the album.
