Lenine
b. Oswaldo Lenine Macedo Pimentel, Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil. Considered one of the most intelligent composers and musicians in Brazil, singer and guitarist Lenine was widely praised during the 90s for his rejuvenation of Brazilian pop. Lenine moved to Rio de Janeiro at 18, carrying with him the roots and rhythms of his home town. Pernambuco is known for maracatu, a syncopated song and dance performed primarily during Carnaval. Lenine's compositions incorporate the refrains of maracatu, integrating traditional rhythm and percussion with modern instruments and imagery. The author of four solid, innovative albums, Lenine has emerged as one of the strongest artists of Brazil's new generation of musicians. His complex compositions based on traditional Brazilian styles and rhythms often incorporate contemporary sounds, including techno and electronica, creating an immediate appeal to today's listeners. His albums, including duo albums with Lula Queiroga and Marcos Suzano, have been described as conceptual, first thought over on a whole and then created measure by measure. Through his search to reproduce the present moment, Lenine is able to place century-old traditional rhythms and musical customs side by side with the newest modern sounds. His musical brilliance utilizes today's technology and computerized music methods such as samplers, MIDI, electronic and synthesized sounds, to project MPB (M£sica Popular Brasileira) to the farthest corners of the planet. Alongside other artists such as the late Chico Science, Lenine has pioneered a progressive brand of Brazilian pop, carving out a place for maracatu beside samba, bossa nova, pag“de and other well-known Brazilian styles.
