Arnaldo Antunes
b. Arnaldo Augusto Nora Antunes, 2 September 1960, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Antunes studied at the Col‚gio Equipe where he showed marked abilities as a musician, composer and writer. He worked on several multi-media projects, including one with Banda Perform tica, which was recorded in 1980 and for which he and Paulo Miklos composed a prize-winning song. He and Miklos formed a new band, Titas, with which they recorded in 1984. Alongside his other activities he made experimental films but his career was jolted off track in 1985 when he was sentenced on drugs charges. The band recorded again and also appeared to great acclaim at Rio De Janeiro's Hollywood Rock Festival in 1988. Their success here led directly to an invitation to appear at 1989's Montreux Jazz Festival. In addition to performing music, Antunes continued to compose, sometimes in collaboration with Jorge Ben, Marina Lima and others. He was also writing books and poetry (his "As Coisas" was set to music by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil) as well as painting pictures, many of which were exhibited.
