Leonard Bernstein
A major figure in Amerivan music, Leonard Bernstein was an highly accomplished composer of both popular and classical works as well as distinguished conductor. He is best known for composing the music for WEST SIDE STORY, ON THE WATERFRONT (for which he was nominated an Academy Award), and CANDIDE. He received six Emmys, 16 Grammys and three Tony Awards in his lifetime. Bernstein, a Harvard graduate, also served as conductor of the New York Philharmonic from 1958-1969, during which he launched the acclaimed YOUNG PEOPLE'S CONCERTS series. In 1972, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Although he passed in 1990, Bernstein's memorable songs from WEST SIDE STORY and ON THE TOWN are frequently recorded by new artists who specialize in the Great American Songbook.
