b. 16 May 1930, Vienna, Austria, d. 27 January 2000, Vienna, Austria. After extensive studies in classical piano, Gulda began a career as an eccentric concert pianist in the mid-40s. He became a master of the works of Mozart, Bach and Beethoven. By the end of the 60s he had also become deeply involved in jazz, playing piano and, later, flute and baritone saxophone. He performed throughout Europe, North and South America, as soloist and as orchestra leader, playing classical music and jazz, often at the same concert. He wrote much of the music played by his orchestras, writing in both classical and jazz styles. As soloists in his longer works, and as sidemen in his orchestras for concerts and recordings, he regularly employed noted American modernists including Phil Woods, Benny Bailey, Albert Heath, Art Farmer, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, Mel Lewis, Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry, Dizzy Gillespie and Chick Corea.
