Yo-Yo Ma
b. Ma Youyou, 7 October 1955, Paris, France. Ma was born of Chinese parentage, his mother was a singer and his father a conductor. Showing early promise, as did his sister Ma Yeou-Cheng, he gave his first public performance at the age of five. He first played violin, then viola, finally settling with the cello. The family relocated to New York, USA when he was seven and a year later he appeared on television with other children under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. Ma attended New York's Trinity School, the Juilliard School of Music, Columbia University, and Harvard University, from where he graduated in 1976. Two years later he won the Avery Fisher Prize and was soon established as a recording artist. He played concertos with numerous symphony orchestras worldwide, Baroque music and contemporary works, such as those composed by Philip Glass. Ma is especially noted for his playing of chamber music, often with pianist Emanuel Ax, winning a Grammy Award. Other Grammy Awards include Best Instrumental Soloist and Best Classical Album, for 1996's Yo-Yo Ma Premieres: Danielpour, Kirchner & Rouse.
