TaxiRide
Formed in Melbourne, Australia, this alternative rock quartet comprises four multi-instrumentalists and singers, Tim Watson, Jason Singh, Tim Wild and Dan Hall, who met while playing in different bands on their local club scene. They made their US breakthrough in 1998 with the single "Get Set", that featured the gentle strains of sitar as part of its layered, undulating melodic tug. It found favour when it was included on the soundtrack to the teen movie Election. The song also achieved gold record status in their native Australia and reached the Top 10. The band's subsequent debut for Sire Records, Imaginate, had some critics comparing their natural sense of pop dynamics and psychedelia to the west coast "paisley underground" sound of the early 80s. The album was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Jack Joseph Puig. Follow-up single, "Everywhere You Go", also went gold in Australia, with Imaginate making its national debut at number 1 before achieving platinum status. The year concluded with Taxiride winning an Aria Award for Best New Single By A New Australian band.
