Aterciopelados
The founding members of Aterciopelados, Andrea Echeverri and Hector Buitrago, originally teamed up in Bogota, Colombia, in 1990 as Delia Y Los Aminoacidos. Buitrago came from a hardcore rock background, heading a group called La Pesitilencia, while Echeverri had been trying to shake off her pop-bolero background by going underground. They once ran one of Bogota's only rock clubs, and although they were at first romantically involved, their relationship became a purely artistic partnership. Their early work, as typified by their first release, Con El Corazon En La Mano, is a noisefest of ringing, distorted guitars and a pummelling punk drumbeat. However, beginning with their second album, El Dorado, Aterciopelados began to expand their sound, adding traditional "llanera" rhythms of the Colombian countryside, as well as the flamenco-bolero sound of their first big hit, "Bolero Falaz".
