The Archies
Not a band in any actual physical sense of the word, the Archies were the musical incarnation of the Saturday morning cartoon/comicbook characters from Riverdale. The brainchild of music impresario Don Kirshner, the act was a studio incarnation that benefited from the likes of crackerjack songwriter and Brill Building vet Jeff Barry. Their biggest hit is the undeniably infectious 1969 single "Sugar Sugar," a song that despite its rigorously manufactured origins is one of the finest pieces of pure pop songwriting ever recorded. Amazingly, traces of the Archies can be found across the pop music landscape, in everything from the anthemic punk of the Ramones and the powerpop of Matthew Sweet to the prefab pop of any number of boy bands and teenage superstars.
