Andrew White
b. Andrew Nathaniel White III, 6 September 1942, Washington, DC, USA. White's uncle played saxophone, flute and guitar. He studied saxophone himself with John Reed in Nashville (1954-60) and music theory with Brenton Banks (1958-60), then attended Howard University, Washington (1960-64), playing with the University Band and Symphonietta. Early work experience was gained with pianist Don Pullen in the late 50s, by which time White was playing alto and tenor saxophones and double bass. During 1964/5 he played tenor saxophone with Kenny Clarke in Paris. In 1965 he led the New Jazz Trio in Buffalo. Next came stints playing electric bass with Stanley Turrentine and tenor saxophone with the Cyclones and Otis Redding (1967). Between 1968 and 1970 White played electric bass with Stevie Wonder and was the principal oboist and English horn player for New York's American Ballet Theatre Orchestra. He played bass in the popular singing group Fifth Dimension from 1971-76, and in a production of Hair in 1971. The following year he guested on Weather Report's I Sing The Body Electric, and in 1973 played electric bass and English horn on their historic Sweetnighter. In September 1973 he completed a catalogue of 209 transcribed John Coltrane solos, for which he had set up (in 1971) his own publishing imprint, Andrew's Music. In 1977 he published a further series of 212 transcribed Coltrane solos. Peter Ochiogrosso described White's work as "doing for 'Trane what Kirschel did for Mozart". Albums of Coltrane solos, trio work with the artists including Buell Neidlinger, and orchestral works - Concerto and Concertino - have been produced since, along with books, articles and further transcriptions (including Eric Dolphy and Charlie Parker solos).
