The Amazing Rhythm Aces
This US country rock band was formed in 1972 by Russell Smith (b. Howard Russell Smith, 17 June 1949, Lafayette, Tennessee, USA; guitar/vocals) and former Jesse Winchester backing musicians Jeff "Stick" Davis (b. Tennessee, USA; bass) and Butch McDade (b. David H. McDade, 24 February 1946, Clarksdale, Missouri, USA, d. 29 November 1998, Maryville, Tennessee, USA; drums). Barry "Byrd" Burton (b. Tennessee, USA, d. 10 March 2008, Hendersonville, Tennessee, USA; guitar, mandolin, dobro), James Hooker (b. 20 July 1948, Winnsboro, South Carolina, USA; keyboards/vocals) and Billy Earhart III (b. Tennessee, USA; keyboards) were brought in over the next three years to complete the original line-up. Mixing country rock with elements of R&B and gospel, they recorded their debut album Stacked Deck, in Memphis in 1975. The single, "Third Rate Romance", reached the Top 20 on both the pop and country charts in the USA. The band later found success only in the country arena, where their second single, "Amazing Grace (Used To Be Her Favorite Song)", was a Top 10 entry.
