Bill Miller
b. Stockbridge-Munsee Reservation, Wisconsin, USA. Miller is a Native American from the Mohican tribe, and much of his songwriting concerns itself with the plight of his people since the frontier days of the nineteenth century. American society's general intolerance and vilification of "red Indians" is something, sadly, that Miller continues to encounter to the present day. He recalls a particularly galling meeting with record company executives in Nashville where he was promised a recording contract if he "dropped that Indian shit". He has never had any intention of betraying his heritage, and a cursory glance at his songbook, including titles such as "Geronimo's Cadillac", "Trail Of Freedom" and "Reservation Road", demonstrate his continuing advocacy of his cultural background. In 1992 he was finally awarded a major recording contract via Jim Ed Norman at Warner Brothers Records, ironically owing to the success of the Hollywood movie Dances With Wolves (from the same industry so responsible for the demonizing of native Americans in their "cowboy and indians" films).
