Since this female a cappella collective formed in Washington, D.C. in 1973, it has performed a kaleidoscopic array of music styles, from Liberian religious music to Woody Guthrie and Buffy Sainte-Marie covers. It has also become a byword for social and political activism, participating in benefits for AIDS and the homeless, as well as contributing its considerable musical expertise to education programs focusing on black music. Its leader, Bernice Johnson-Reagon, is the mother of 21st-century singer-songwriter Toshi Reagon.
