Ritchie Valens
Born out of the L.A. basin community of Mexican-Americans, Ritchie Valens created a style that merged his heritage and '50s rock & roll. His "La Bamba" stands as one of the most innovative compositions of the first-generation rock era. He remains an icon of promise unfulfilled, dying at age 17 in a plane crash with Buddy Holly. Ensuing decades saw the making a popular film about his life and even a posthumous induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
