Manfred Mann
Keyboardist Manfred Mann's eponymous band started out as part of the 1960s British invasion, combining jazz, blues, Brill Building pop, and the songs of Bob Dylan. In the '70s they added synths and Bruce Springsteen songs, and turned into the thinking man's prog-rock band. The common thread in both incarnations: fantastic musicianship and a sense of humor.

MM had a few great instrumentals; Fritz the cat, Pluto the Dog, that really stuck in my mind as insightful, considered and polished.
