Letters to Cleo
The debut long-playing release by this Boston, Massachusetts, USA-based power pop band, 1993's Aurora Glory Alice, caused an immediate impact, leading to a major label contract with Giant Records. They repackaged and re-released the album in October 1994, including the song "Here And Now'. This featured on the soundtrack to the syndicated television show Melrose Place, giving the band, originally featuring Kay Hanley (vocals), Scott Riebling (bass), Michael Eisenstein (guitar), Greg McKenna (guitar) and Stacy Jones (drums), its first mainstream exposure. However, the rushed release of Wholesale Meats And Fish failed to consolidate on the band's initial breakthrough. It spent just one week in the Billboard charts in the summer of 1995. The whole experience left Hanley sceptical about the true impact of the single's success. By the advent of a third album, 1997"s Go!, Giant had changed its name to Revolution Records and Letters To Cleo's personnel had shifted. Jones departed to join Veruca Salt, and was replaced by Tom Polce. The producer was Peter Collins (Jewel, Indigo Girls, Sneaker Pimps). Cars keyboard player Greg Hawkes also made a guest appearance on Go! Between albums, Hanley had expanded her horizons by appearing as Mary Magdalene in the Boston Rock Opera's production of Jesus Christ Superstar (her co-star was Gary Cherone, the voice of Van Halen and ex-Extreme). The band's long out-of-print debut cassette, Sister, was re-released the following year through their own Dot.Rat imprint. After Letters From Cleo eventually called it a day in 2000, Hanley recorded as the voice of Josie for the soundtrack to Josie And The Pussycats and began work on her solo debut. Cherry Marmalade was released in August 2002.
