Time
Cliff Richard, the UK "Peter Pan of Pop", finally realised a long-cherished ambition to star in a lavish stage musical when this production opened at the Dominion Theatre in London on 9 April 1986. It was devised and produced by Dave Clark, leader of the popular 60s group the Dave Clark Five who had major chart hits with "Glad All Over" and "Bits And Pieces". Clark also wrote the book and lyrics with David Soames, and composed the music with Jeff Daniels. The show's theme is one of human survival. Earth itself is on trial before the High Court of the Universe, and Cliff Richard, in the role of a spiritual rock star, is beamed out to the Andromeda galaxy to face the music on Earth's behalf. The planet is saved from extinction by the intervention of a galactic sage, known as the universe's Ultimate Word of Truth, in the shape of a huge holographic speaking image of the distinguished British actor Laurence Olivier. All this was enhanced by the use of spectacular sets and sensational special effects, the like of which London had never seen before. Arlene Phillips, formerly of the pop dance group Hot Gossip, engineered some appropriately high-tech choreography, and the score included several cosmic musical numbers such as "Time Talkin'", "The Music Of The Spheres", "Law Of The Universe", "What On Earth", and "We're The UFO". Despite a luke-warm reception from the critics, Time became a popular tourist attraction particularly for its imaginative use of the space-age technology, and stayed at the Dominion for two years, a total of 777 performances. During the run Cliff Richard was succeeded by David Cassidy.
