Formerly known as Avenger, this German power trio changed their name to Rage in 1985, to avoid confusion with the British Avenger (and thereby get confused with the British band Rage). A series of line-up changes ensued before the combination of vocalist Peavey Wagner, guitarist Manni Schmidt and drummer Chris Efthimiadis gelled. Their first two albums were rather one-dimensional, being competent, but uninspiring, techno-thrash affairs. With the recording of Perfect Man, they experimented more with song structures and had improved considerably as musicians. Future releases combined the technical prowess and subtle melodies of Rush with the unbridled aggression of Megadeth. Over the years the band has been augmented with Spiros Efthimiadis (guitar) and, Sven Fischer (guitar), Their reputation in Germany has grown rapidly and they have a significant catalogue, but they have yet to make any significant impression outside their homeland although there is a loyal core of fans in the UK. The most recent line-up features Wagner together with Victor Smolski (guitar) and Mike Terrana (drums).
