The Detroit Cobras
Best known for Motown Records and its car manufacturing companies, Detroit, Michigan, USA is also famous for pumping out a vast legion of garage rock outfits over the years. While the Detroit Cobras posses a certain familiarity to their garage rock godfathers, the band's cover versions of old time rock 'n' roll and R&B songs sets them apart. The idea for the Detroit Cobras came during the mid-90s, when guitarist Steve Shaw was turned on to R&B and soul via ex-Big Star vocalist Alex Chilton (during four-track recording sessions between the two at Chilton's New Orleans house). After returning to Detroit, Shaw joined up with Maribel Restrepo (guitar), Rachel Nagy (vocals), and Jeff Meier (bass; who also doubled as recording engineer for the band). Several drummers passed through the early line-up, including Vic Hill and Chris Fachini, before Damian Lang was installed as the band's regular percussionist.
