Final Fantasy
Essentially a solo project named after the successful Japanese video game series, Final Fantasy is the creation of self-taught violinist Owen Pallett (b. Ontario, Canada), and various guest performers. He studied contemporary opera composition at the University of Toronto, but shunned a career in classical music in favour of involvement in the Canadian indie music scene. He has worked extensively as a violinist, arranging, touring and recording with acts including the Hidden Cameras, the Vinyl Caf, Jimmy Guthrie and most famously with the Arcade Fire. Pallett is also a member of Picastro and Les Mouches, the latter of which he left when Final Fantasy took on the role of the Arcade Fire's opening act. Final Fantasy's debut album, Has A Good Home, was produced and engineered by guest drummer Leon Taheny and released in July 2005. An album of layered looping pizzicato and bowed string motifs backed by drums, piano and guitars, the lyrics covered subjects ranging from promiscuous parents to the effects of a relationship breaking up ("they say heartbreak is good for the skin but all that it's helped is my drinking").
