High Tide
Heavy/psychedelic progressive British band formed in 1969 by Tony Hill (ex-Misunderstood; guitar, vocals, keyboards), Simon House (violin, piano), Roger Hadden (drums, organ) and Peter Pavli (ex-White Rabbit; bass). Signed to the Clearwater production agency, they obtained a recording contract with Liberty Records who were eager to join the progressive rock bandwagon that had been milked dry by other record companies. High Tide was a more than credible debut, complete with Mervyn Peake-styled sleeve illustrations. "Walking Down Their Outlook" features Hill's Jim Morrison-like vocals although longer tracks such as "Pushed But Not Forgotten" allowed House and Hill to stretch out and improvise - always a feature of their live performances - with lead guitar and violin competing with each other. They played their first live concert with fellow Clearwater band, Hawkwind. After two albums with Liberty they were dropped, and a poor second album sold badly. After numerous tours they became involved with Arthur Brown, Magic Muscle, and the post-Arthur Brown band, Rustic Hinge. By 1972 Hadden was suffering from mental problems and was placed in hospital where he remains to this day. Hill then went on to work with Drachen Theaker while Pavli and House joined the Third Ear Band. Pavli soon involved himself in a number of musical projects with Robert Calvert and Michael Moorcock; House, meanwhile, joined Hawkwind and later David Bowie's band. In 1987 House and Pavli re-formed High Tide and have overseen various other related projects and releases. Hill released a solo album, Playing For Time, in 1991, while House again joined up with Hawkwind and Magic Muscle.
