Electric Wizard
Dealing in exactly the type of eerie monolithic doom that you would expect from a band emanating from darkest Dorset, England, Justin Oborn (vocals/guitar), Tim Bagshaw (bass) and Mark Greening (drums) first got together in 1993 after Oborn left his previous band Eternal. Drawn together by a mutual love of Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus and marijuana, the band would get stoned and crank out ponderous riffs until they had recognisable songs, the first examples being released as "Demon Lung" a split single with Our Haunted Kingdom (an early incarnation of Orange Goblin). An expectedly heavy affair, the self-titled debut emerged soon after and included some ragged Blue Cheer moments among the ultra slow, dirge-like riffing. Despite a noticeable disinterest in playing live gigs in support, the trio nonetheless developed a rare momentum and Come My Fanatics " followed a year later. Still preposterously heavy, the release also contained a more pronounced Hawkwind-style space-rock influence. A further split EP Chrono.naut (with Orange Goblin) extended the theme almost expanding into the Krautrock territory of Can and Amon Dl. The Supercoven EP was a return to bowel-quaking riffs with two torturously drawn out arrangements, complete with suitably twisted cover art by Oborn.
