THE SWORD
US retro-metal band from Austin, Texas, formed in 2003 by J.D. Cronise (vocals/guitar), Kyle Shutt (guitar), Bryan Richie (bass) and Trivett Wingo (drums). Drawing on the classic heavy rock blueprint established by Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin several decades previously, the quartet rose to prominence in 2005 alongside fellow "hipster metal" bands Early Man and Witch. Following two years spent playing small gigs around their native Texas, a fine performance at the South By Southwest Music Conference helped promote their music to a wider audience. After signing a recording contract with Kernado Records, the quartet made their recording debut in 2006 with Age Of Winters. Any accusations of unoriginality were swiftly rebutted by the excellence of tracks such as "Ebethron" and the doom-inspired "Lament For The Aurochs". (NB: Not to be confused with the 80s Canadian heavy metal band of the same name.)
