B.o.B
Formed in north London, England, in 1986 by Richard Blackborow (b. 21 March 1966, Hackney, London, England), Simon Armstrong (b. 12 February 1966, Hull, Humberside, England), Jem Morris (b. Aberdare, South Wales; bass) and a drum machine, Bob were always destined to become an archetypal "indie" pop band. Their first release was on flexi-disc only, laying the ground rules for a series of small-scale single releases and British tours that established a passionate following in the provinces. Gary Connors (b. London, England) replaced the drum machine in 1988, only to make way for Dean Leggett (b. 30 August 1963), who had previously drummed for Jamie Wednesday (soon to become Carter USM). With solid support from influential BBC disc jockey John Peel and a healthy selection of earnest, old-fashioned guitar-based tunes such as "Convenience", Bob ploughed an individualistic furrow around the outskirts of the music business, surviving another line-up alteration when Morris was replaced by the bassist from the Caretaker Race, Stephen Hersom (b. 28 April 1963, Plaistow, London, England). Perhaps fittingly after such a determined career, when Bob finally came round to making an album after five years, the record's commercial potential was undermined by the collapse of the Rough Trade Records distribution system. Yet, far from being damaged by the experience, this disaster merely seemed to strengthen Bob's idiosyncratic resolve.
