A Girl Called Eddy
b. Erin Moran, New Jersey, USA. US singer-songwriter Erin Moran aka A Girl Called Eddy grew up on the Jersey Shore in the small town of Neptune. She learned to play the piano as a teenager but her first experience of the music industry was a less than compelling job as a receptionist at a New York recording studio. A more worthwhile gig playing keyboards and singing backing vocals with former It Bites member Francis Dunnery gave Moran the confidence to attempt singing her own material, and she landed a support slot with UK quintet Cousteau. Adopting her unusual new name (taken from a school nickname), Moran recorded an EP of her own material that was released by the Le Grand Magistery label in 2001. An atmospheric mixture of pop, jazz and folk, the five-track Tears All Over Town featured the wonderful piano ballad "Heartache" and a cover version of Stephen Bishop's "The Same Old Tears". The EP received several excellent reviews and led to the Epitaph Records' offshoot Anti offering Moran a recording contract. She flew to the UK to work on her debut album with former Pulp associate Richard Hawley, teaming up with the same band who helped record Hawley's acclaimed solo release, Low Edges. Released in the late summer of 2004, A Girl Called Eddy's self-titled debut album featured new versions of "Heartache" and another song featured on the Tears All Over Town EP, "Girls Can Really Tear You Up Inside". The new material ranged from the throwaway pop of "Life Thru The Same Lens" to Moran's heartfelt ode to her late mother, "Kathleen".
