Strawbs
Led by British guitarist/vocalist Dave Cousins, the Strawbs started life in the mid '60s as a genial bluegrass unit called the Strawberry Hill Boys. They soon glided into a folkier sound, adding a pre-Fairport Convention Sandy Denny on vocals and shortening their name to the Strawbs. By the time of their 1969 debut album, Denny was gone, and the band had further evolved, incorporating rock and neo-classical elements, portending the '70s prog wave about to hit unsuspecting rock fans. The band continued to make creative, well-received albums for much of the next decade, never quite cracking the U.S. market but liked by fans and critics. The constant shuffling of personnel would plague the band, although Cousins managed to keep some version of the Strawbs alive into the 2000s.
