Helen Boulding
b. Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. Boulding's early experiences as a singer were impromptu performances at the popular Sheffield musical venue Fagan's (run by her uncle and aunt). After leaving school she worked in a steel factory and began writing songs in her spare time. Through word-of-mouth she began to get noticed outside of the city, and worked on songs and as a guest vocalist with former reality television show contestant Alex Parks. Boulding's independently released Housework EP attracted good notices in 2005, but the singer-songwriter was encouraged to set up her own label for the release of her album follow-up. Celebrity fan Bryan Adams took the cover photo for New Red Dress, which was released on Boulding's Maid In Sheffield label at the start of 2008. The album was a solid collection of singer-songwriter material, moving pleasingly between rockier tracks and ballads and featuring co-writes from rock luminaries such as Chris Difford and Rick Wright. During the same period Boulding appeared as a guest vocalist on the Orb album The Dream.
