Ashra
Formed by guitarist Manuel Gttsching (b. 9 September 1952, West Germany) in 1975, Ashra became the full-time outlet for the experiments with electronics that had begun to infiltrate the sound of his previous band, Ash Ra Tempel. Gttsching had become the focal point of Ash Ra Tempel following the release of their debut album, and with the band's music moving in a less psychedelic direction a new outlet was demanded. Gttsching's 1975 solo album, Inventions For Electric Guitar, relied heavily on electronic effects, a creative leap that was carried over to the following year's Ashra debut, New Age Of Earth. Echoing the ambient space rock direction of fellow Germans Tangerine Dream, this beautiful album was later heralded as a major influence by a host of "new age" artists.
