Katatonia
Now straddling the uncertain boundaries between death, black and thrash metal, this Swedish outfit was originally formed in 1987 around key members Anders Nystrm (b. 22 April 1975, Sweden; guitar/vocals) and Jonas Renske (b. 19 May 1975, Sweden; drums/vocals). The first incarnation of the band did not last long, however, folding after a few months of performing pure black metal. However, in 1992 they regrouped and recorded a demo, Jhva Elohim Meth " The Revival. This led to a contract with No Fashion and once the band had gained some popularity, the demo was later issued by the Netherlands-based VIC label. The debut album, Dance Of December Souls, recorded with bass player Israphel Wing, was reviewed positively for its technical, economical approach and impressed Opeth singer Mikael kerfeldt enough for him to offer his services on the follow-up, Brave Murder Day, issued by the Avantgarde label. This album also featured new guitarist Fredrik Norrman (b. 7 December 1974, Sweden). A move to the Peaceville label saw the band's profile rise and, together with the reissue of an early EP, For Funerals To Come, Katatonia's fanbase began to grow exponentially throughout Europe. Micke Oretoft filled the vacant bass slot on the Saw You Drown EP and Discouraged Ones, while new members Mattias Norrman (b. 18 September 1976, Sweden; bass) and Daniel Liljekvist (b. 17 July 1977, Sweden; drums) debuted on 2001's Last Fair Deal Gone Down. Katatonia remain one of the most versatile extreme metal acts in existence.
