At The Gates
This heavy thrash quintet from Gothenburg, Sweden, started with a generic approach to their music and eventually became noted for their innate ability to write catchy death-metal tunes. Formed in late 1990, the band comprised Tomas Lindberg (b. 16 October 1972; vocals), Jonas Bj”rler (b. 26 February 1973; bass), Anders Bj”rler (b. 26 February 1973; guitar), Adrian Erlandsson (b. 27 October 1970, Malm”, Sweden; drums) and Alf Svensson (guitar), who recorded their first release, the Gardens Of Grief EP, for the Dolores label. Having thus established their death metal credentials they embarked on a prolonged bout of touring with a variety of other heavyweight acts, such as Massacre and Immolation. After signing to Peaceville Records for their first album, The Red In The Sky Is Ours, further touring ensued with My Dying Bride, before they released With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness in August 1993. Replacing Svensson with Martin Larsson (b. 28 February 1973; guitar), they gradually established a reputation as not only one of the most talented bands on the death metal scene, but also as one of the hardest-working live units. With Terminal Spirit Disease the band gained widespread acclaim for their ability to create music of penetrating intensity suffused with melody. Their reputation preceding them, there followed further UK and European touring with My Dying Bride and Anathema, before they finally headlined their own shows. A move to Earache Records resulted in arguably their most complete and accessible album, Slaughter Of The Soul. Once again the songs were brutal, raw and boasted a sense of melody lacking among most other bands of the genre. Yet more touring followed, this time in the USA, while the album was nominated in the Best Hard Rock category at the Swedish Grammy Awards, and the video for the lead track, "Blinded By Fear", became one of the most heavily played clips on MTV's Headbanger's Ball. Unfortunately, their industrious attitude proved to be their undoing, as the extreme touring schedule put the band under huge pressure, resulting in the main songwriting team of the two Bj”rler brothers splitting in 1996. The remainder of the band felt that they could not continue and At The Gates splintered into a number of separate fledgling projects. The Bj”rler brothers and Erlandsson were reunited in Haunted.
