Moving Targets
This hardcore punk band, led by Kenny Chambers (vocals, lead guitar), formed in 1981 in Ipswich, Massachusetts, USA, a quaint fishing town just north of Boston. In keeping with their regional origins, Moving Targets would display a definite Mission Of Burma influence as their career progressed. Chambers, Pat Leonard (bass, vocals) and Pat Brady (drums) made their debut by recording three tracks for the Boston regional compilation Bands That Could Be God, alongside the likes of Salem 66 and Deep Wound (whose J. Mascis would later spearhead Dinosaur Jr). However, it was quite some time before anyone paid attention to their numerous demos and invited them into a "proper" studio. In 1986 Lou Giordano (who had originally produced the compilation tracks) helped the band record 15 songs which finally persuaded Taang! Records to offer them a contract. Burning In Water emerged in October 1986. A strong debut, the band's progress was nevertheless impeded when Chambers became involved in a variety of sidelines. These included Dred Foole And The Din (two albums), the Groinoids and Bullet LaVolta, with whom he toured. Moving Targets eventually re-formed with Chambers and Brady joined by Chuck Freeman (bass). During disagreements over the second album's post-punk direction the band disintegrated. Chambers then recorded a solo album. A new line-up of Moving Targets, featuring two ex-members of Jones Very, Jeff Goddard (bass) and Jamie Van Bramer (drums), as well as guitarist Ben Segal, recorded two more studio albums before Chambers elected to concentrate on solo work.
