b. 19 December 1928, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Nostalgia reared its grey and grizzly head at the Palace Theatre in New York when George M!, a celebration of the life and works of George M. Cohan, opened on 10 April 1968. Just under three weeks later, audiences at the nearby Biltmore Theatre came face to face (and other parts of the anatomy) with what many theatregoers felt was the "grim reality" of the present and future, in the full-frontal shape of Hair, the "American Tribal Rock Musical". Galt MacDermot wrote the music for what was not so much a show as a social phenomenon, and the book and lyrics were by Gerome Ragni and James Rado. The trio won Grammy Awards for the Cast Album, which spent over a year in the US chart and spawned several hit singles, the most successful of which was probably the Fifth Dimension's "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In".
