finetune artist: Soulja Boy

b. DeAndre Ramone Way, 28 July 1990, Chicago, Illinois, USA. This US rapper celebrated a US number 1 hit shortly after his 17th birthday when his debut, "Crank That (Soulja Boy)", completed its rise up the charts. Raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Soulja Boy began rapping for real in his early teens. His travels continued when he moved with his father to Batesville, Mississippi, at the age of 14, where he began to mix the Memphis rap style (Batesville is only 40 miles from the Tennessee city) with the snap dance he had picked up during his time in Atlanta. His father had bought him a home studio set-up, allowing the newly named Soulja Boy to experiment with beats and raps in his own time. His profile escalated when he began playing national shows and went into overdrive when he set up a MySpace site in summer 2006. Naturally it was not long before major labels came sniffing around, leading to a contract with Mr. Collipark's Interscope distributed Collipark Records label. Soulja Boy's "Crank That (Soulja Boy)" was based on a dance the rapper had begun performing at shows, which he repeated on the promotional video. The single rose steadily up the charts before reaching the number 1 position in September 2007, where it stayed for most of the next two months. Both the single and the attendant Souljaboytellem.com were the subject of repeated slurs from more "authentic" rappers, who decried the dance rap style as "cheap" and marking the death of hip-hop.
