Formed in 2001 in Magdeburg, Germany, by Bill Kaulitz (b. 1 September 1989, Magdeburg, West Germany; vocals), Tom Kaulitz (b. 1 September 1989, West Magdeburg, Germany; guitar/vocals), Georg Listing (b. 31 March 1987, West Germany; bass), and Gustav Sch„fer (b. 8 September 1988, West Germany; drums). The youthful quartet originally performed as Devellish before changing its name to Tokio Hotel and securing a major label contract with Sony BMG. The label teamed the band up with experienced songwriters and musicians but, despite their investment, opted to release Tokio Hotel during recording sessions for their debut. Fortunately, the Universal Music Group stepped in and the quartet was able to complete work on the album. The aggressive mix of glam goth punk and emo rock and Bill Kaulitz's androgynous looks seemed tailor made for an international crossover from the moment Tokio Hotel released Schrei in 2005. The album was an immediate hit in the band's native Germany and was re-released in an expanded version in 2006, retitled Schrei: So Laut Du Kannst.
