SATYRICON
One of the leaders of the Norwegian black metal scene, Satyricon are as comically attired and deathly serious about their intent as peers such as Burzum and Mayhem. Led by the brooding blonde figure of vocalist and songwriter Satyr himself, with the aid of the similarly pseudonymous Kveldulv and Frost, Satyricon made their debut in 1994 with Dark Medieval Times for their own Moonfog Records label. This established the group's lyrical concerns - a patently nationalistic pride in Norse and Viking heritage as well as the atavistic belief that society is sliding towards Armageddon. This was also evident in their preceding demos (the second of which, 1994's The Forest Is My Throne, was later released as a split-CD with Enslaved). On their satanic/paganist position, Satyr proved himself both forthright and resigned: "It would not be realistic to get rid of Christianity, I won't live that long anyway. At least I've contributed to the War.' The group's most high-profile release so far, 1996"s Nemesis Divina, was promoted with a substantial European tour alongside Dissection and Gorgoroth. In 2006 they released what is probably their finest album Now Diabolical; the riffs were slicker, the lyrics were darker and the metal was simply heavier.
