The Weepies
This folk pop duo was formed in 2001 by New York-based singer-songwriters Steve Tannen (b. New York City, New York, USA) and Deb Talan (b. Massachusetts, USA). After meeting at a Tannen concert they realised that their styles perfectly complemented each other and launched the Weepies (they would also enter a personal relationship and get married). Both artists continued to work in a singular capacity, however, and their partnership developed as they helped each other to write and produce solo albums. They made their bow as the Weepies with 2004's independently released Happiness, a charming collection of original material recorded with Jim Henry (guitar), Richard Gates (bass) and Jeff Berlin (drums). The duo subsequently signed to Nettwerk Records and released their major label debut, Say I Am You, in 2006. The album was more polished than Happiness but did not deviate very far from its musical blueprint, melodic folk pop replete with gentle harmonies and restrained guitar work. A third collection followed in 2008, with the recording sessions taking place around the time Tannen and Talan worked with pop singer Mandy Moore on her album Wild Hope. In addition to his solo and Weepies commitments, Tannen also plays with his brother Greg in the Tannen Brothers.
