Doro
b. Dorothee Pesch, 3 June 1964, Dsseldorf, Germany. Pesch, the leading light and vocalist of the German heavy metal band Warlock, dissolved the band after the release of 1987's Triumph And Agony. Retaining only bass player Tommy Henriksen, she embarked on a solo career under the name of Doro. To complete the new line-up she recruited guitarist John Devin and drummer Bobby Rondinelli (ex-Rainbow). With Joey Balin as writing partner, Force Majeure offered a departure from her previous heavy style, moving towards a more mainstream AOR approach in a bid for commercial success. It featured an embarrassing cover version of Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" as the opening track, and fared poorly. Jettisoning the entire band in favour of hired hands, she recorded Doro with Gene Simmons (of Kiss) as producer. Musically, this was even further away from her roots, an attempt to achieve chart success that verged on desperation, a fate that also hampered the 1991 European release True At Heart. The same years's Rare Diamonds was a compilation of older material, giving Doro time for a rethink about her next career move. When she did re-emerge in 1993 with Angels Never Die, interest was minimal. The 1995 follow-up Machine II Machine featured the producer and songwriter Jack Ponti and it managed to avoid the overt commercial overtones of its forerunners. However, tracks such as "Tie Me Up' still offered little evidence of songwriting maturity. Doro moved to the Warners group for her next album, 1998"s Love Me In Black, on which she finally began to embrace a new musical direction. The 2000 collection Calling The Wild was her first album to gain an American release in 10 years, gaining distribution through the Koch label (SPV in Europe). Following one further release for SPV/Koch, Doro switched labels again and embarked on a bold if somewhat misguided project, recording new versions of her old hits with the aid of the Classic Night Orchestra.
